A firm built for the people who do the work.

WHAT WORKING AT VIGILANT LOOKS LIKE

Vigilant is not a typical architecture or engineering firm. We grew out of an owner's project management practice, which means we value construction knowledge, practical thinking, and the ability to tell a client the truth about their budget as much as we value design skill.

We also believe that a firm's output depends on the judgement and care of the people on the file. That belief isn't a statement of intent. It's written into our policies.

A results-oriented work environment, in practice

Vigilant introduced 100% flex time in 2016, nearly a decade before the pandemic made flexible work a common talking point. There are no fixed desk times, no 9-to-5 requirement, and no expectation that presence equals productivity. Monday and Wednesday are in-office days for collaboration. The rest of the week is up to you.

Unlimited vacation with a floor

We don't count vacation days. The only hard rule is at least two weeks off per year. The firm closes for roughly ten days over Christmas and New Year as a paid company-wide break, on top of individual vacation. Our people take between 3.5 and 5 weeks annually.

Continuing education

Up to $1,500 per year covering 80% of eligible tuition and registration fees after two years of tenure.

Our parental leave top-up reaches 100% of salary at four years of tenure. It applies equally to birthing, non-birthing, and adoptive parents.

Parental leave that applies to every kind of parent

A flat structure

We use "team members" deliberately. Everyone, partners included, rotates through a shared chore chart. Integrated teams, direct client relationships from early in your career, and practical problem-solving on every project.

  • "What I love most about Vigilant is the supportive environment. I always feel at ease discussing my career goals with leadership, and I never hesitate to ask questions about tasks and projects."

Jordayn Karlowsky, B.EnvD | Project Designer

  • "My favourite part is that everyone has gone above and beyond in answering my questions, which helps me get better every day. Even just getting to observe Holly, Lloyd, and Ian leading meetings and how they communicate in certain situations has shown me what I'd like to be able to do one day and how to get there."

Elise Jamieson, EIT | Junior Project Engineer

  • "Working at Vigilant is a real treat, because of our people, environment, and mission. I not only feel valued within the organization, but also get a sense of purpose and contribution via my work with Vigilant."

Jeremy Dyer, B.Tech | Senior Cost Estimator

  • "I appreciate working at Vigilant because it fosters a supportive environment for young parents, offering flexibility that allows me to effectively balance work and family life. Knowing I have the support I need makes me feel valued and enables me to thrive both personally and professionally."

Adam Mandville, P. Eng | Senior Project Manager
